Perdue Farms Sued over “Humane” Claim
The Humane Society of the United States has filed a class action lawsuit against the nation’s third-largest poultry producer, Perdue Farms, alleging false advertising of factory farmed chicken products as “humane.”
The suit is filed on behalf of all consumers “duped” by Perdue. It claims that the company illegally markets its Harvestland and Perdue chicken products with labels that say the chickens were “Humanely Raised” in violation of the New Jersey Consumer Fraud Act.
“Rather than implementing humane reforms,” said HSUS counsel Jonathan Lovvorn, “Perdue has simply slapped ‘humanely raised’ stickers on its factory farmed products, hoping consumers won’t know the difference.”
