Ivory Trading Priest Under Investigation
In the wake of revelations about the global ivory business and the Catholic Church, the Vatican has announced that self-confessed child abuser Msgr. Cristobal Garcia is under investigation and that he was removed from his ministerial duties three months ago. [readon]
In the cover story “Blood Ivory” in the October edition of National Geographic magazine, Garcia, now a high-level priest in the Philippines, explains to reporter Bryan Christy how to smuggle ivory.
But rather than applaud the article, the Vatican simply complains that Christy pretended to the monsignor that he was a devotee. Once again, where’s the outrage that a child rapist is misrepresenting himself to altar boys and their families, and is leading a global racket that’s killing elephants by the tens of thousands?
