Chinese Groups Rescue Dogs from Trader
Two Chinese animal protection organizations paid $13,000 to a dog trader in Southwest China’s Sichuan province to rescue nearly 800 dogs who were on their way to restaurants.
Qiao Wei, 26, who works for Sichuan Qiming Companion Animal Protection Center (SCAPC), said his group and the Love of Home Animal Rescue Center (LHARC) said they paid the dog trader because they’d been told he was very poor, and in exchange for his promise to give up dog trading.
Any future dogs, Qiao said, dogs will be taken away without any compensation. The agreements was signed by the trader, the two animal protection organizations and the local district government.
