First Contact – A Black Tie Event
It was first contact – and love at first sight – when three humans on an Antarctic expedition met up with 9,000 emperor penguins on Princess Ragnhild Coast.
The penguin colony had been spotted three years ago in a satellite photograph, but no humans had ever met them until a three-man team set out from the Derwael Ice Rise, where they were working with glaciologists some 30 miles from the colony, and 150 miles from their base. [readon]
The penguins showed no fear of the humans, but the men kept their distance anyway in order not to disrupt the life and culture of these remarkable birds.
