Veterinarians Warn about Danger of Antibiotics
Amid growing concern about the indiscriminate use of antibiotics at factory farms, a new warning has been issued by the British Veterinary Association (BVA). To mark European Antibiotic Awareness Day last week, the BVA warned veterinarians in the UK that failure to use antimicrobials responsibly could result in their use having to be restricted.
The warning was greeted positively by the Federation of Veterinarians of Europe.
“Antimicrobial resistance is an enormous problem for both human and animal health,” said Harvey Locke, President of the BVA. “As veterinary surgeons we have a duty to use these medicines responsibly for the good of animal health and welfare as well as public health. On Antibiotic Awareness Day our message to vets is clear: use them responsibly or lose them.”
